Betzabel Cajiao Garcia

My name is Betzabel Cajiao Garcia, born in Venezuela and raised in Curaçao. After finishing high school in Curaçao, I moved to the Netherlands, specifically Maastricht, to pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences. Following my bachelor’s degree, I continued my education in Utrecht, where I earned a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, specializing in the Biology of Disease track.

I later obtained my PhD in Groningen, focusing on molecular diagnostics to better understand why patients were not receiving the care they rightfully deserved. Soon after completing my PhD, I was hired as a Project Manager at UMC Utrecht in the Van Creveldkliniek. There, I developed strong management skills and collaborated with a broad network of European scientists in hematology to help lay the foundation for new policies in Sickle Cell Disease.

After two exciting years in hematology, I decided to return to Curaçao, where I secured a position at Fundashon Prevenshon as Project Leader for the Vita Screening Program. This program speaks to me not only as a scientist, but also personally as a human being, as I prioritize health and well-being as an essential part of my life journey.
